Sculptra ® is poly-L-lactic acid, which has been used safely in medicine and surgery for over 30 years. This treatment stimulates collagen, a natural protein, to correct the effects of facial lipoatrophy.
Sculptra® is biodegradable, meaning the body breaks down and eliminates it easily. It is a facial injectable treatment that works beneath the skin’s surface.
Sculptra Aesthetic can stimulate collagen production and reinforce its inner structure. As the body naturally absorbs Sculptra over time, it gradually increases facial volume and restores a youthful appearance.
By enhancing collagen production, Sculptra helps to address signs of ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines and skin laxity. Its gradual absorption and collagen stimulation provide long-lasting results.
Sculptra® is injected directly below the skin on your face with a blunt needle also known as a cannula or with a sharp needle. It has both an immediate and a delayed effect.
After the initial treatment, there’s usually a one to six-week period where some of the volume gained may be lost.
Do not worry, your collagen production will increase over time and your face wrinkles both deep and superficial decrease. This occurs 5-6 weeks after each treatment and may persist for up to 9 months.
Always tell the person treating you if you have any of the side effects listed. If these side effects are severe, do not wait, contact your GP or attend an Emergency Department immediately. Please contact a doctor if you have pain, redness or a fever that does not respond to antipyretics (a drug that reduces fever).
At our healthcare facility, we prioritise involving our patients in decisions regarding their care and treatment. We value your input and aim to provide you with all the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.
If you decide to go ahead with a particular treatment, we will ask you to sign a consent form. This form confirms that you understand the treatment’s details and agree to proceed with it.
We understand that you may have questions or concerns about our consent process. That’s why we encourage you to speak to any of our staff members caring for you. They will be happy to provide you with more information about the consent process or address any queries you may have.
The level of discomfort experienced during injections can vary, ranging from momentary discomfort to a more significant level of pain. To reduce discomfort, a local anaesthetic with a numbing effect will be injected with Sculptra®. Ice packs or a local anaesthetic cream can also be applied to the face before the injection. For more information about the local anaesthetic, please read our leaflet Having an Anaesthetic.
How long the effects of Sculptra® last depend on various factors including skin structure, degree of facial fat loss, lifestyle and the ageing process. Generally, the improvements from Sculptra® last between 12-24 months.
For optimal results, a typical treatment plan usually consists of four sessions that are spaced apart by around four to six weeks. This timeframe allows for the treatment to take effect and for any necessary adjustments to be made. The need for repeat treatments varies from person to person.
However, when you feel that the result of the treatment has disappeared by approximately 50 per cent you should see us for follow-up and top-up if necessary. Please speak to your clinician before all of the Sculptra® effects have been lost.
You may see results 4-6 weeks following your initial treatment, depending on how quickly your body has built up collagen, but your true results will become apparent only after you’ve completed your treatment series. Our recommendation is 2-3 treatments, with an 8-week interval between each session.
